Math is full of symbols, and students need to recognize and name them quickly to read and write math expressions fluently.

These free printable math symbol flashcards cover the core symbols students encounter from kindergarten through elementary school:

  • plus
  • minus
  • equals
  • greater than
  • less than
  • not equal to
  • multiplication
  • division
  • and more

One card per symbol, clearly labeled with the symbol name.

These pair naturally with all the number flashcard sets, 0–10, 0–20, and 0–100: for building and reading math expressions. Combine with printable play money for real-world math context.

Learning Math Symbols Activities and Ideas

These cards build the math vocabulary and symbol recognition students need to read and write equations:

  • Expression building: combine symbol cards with number flashcards to build complete math expressions on the table — students arrange cards to form equations, inequalities, and number comparisons. Seeing the pieces separately makes the structure of math notation explicit
  • Symbol name practice: hold up a symbol card and have students call out its name; then reverse it — call out the name and have students identify or draw the symbol. Math vocabulary fluency goes both ways
  • Greater than / less than games: place two number cards on the table, students pick the correct symbol card (>, <, or =) and place it between them. Works for any number range and is easy to differentiate by adjusting the numbers
  • True or false: build an expression with number cards and a symbol card (e.g., “5 > 3” or “4 = 7”) and ask: is this true or false? If false, how do you fix it? Builds critical thinking about math notation instead of just recognition
  • Math word wall: post the symbol cards on a dedicated math vocabulary section of your word wall as each new operation is introduced — include the symbol, its name, and a short example expression
  • Symbol scavenger hunt: give students a math workbook page and have them find, circle, and count each symbol type — builds awareness of symbols in context and is a good warm-up before a lesson introducing a new symbol
  • Introduce one symbol at a time: when starting multiplication or division, anchor the new symbol card at your focus wall for the unit — a 30-second daily symbol review (“this means groups of…”) grounds the new operation in language before the algorithm

Print Sizes and Options:

  • Full page (1 per page): best for bulletin boards, classroom displays, and circle time anchor charts students can see from across the room
  • Half page (2 per page): ideal for homeschool binders, learning centers, and early learners who need larger cards for handling and reading
  • Quarter page (4 per page): great for individual student sets, hands-on activities, and paper-saving when you need multiple copies

Who These Are For

  • Kindergarteners and 1st graders learning the plus, minus, and equals signs; 2nd and 3rd graders adding multiplication, division, and comparison symbols; 4th grade and up for more complex notation
  • Students who can compute operations correctly but struggle with the written symbols — a common gap for students who learned math concepts through manipulatives or mental math before formal notation was introduced
  • In the classroom: Post the most relevant symbols on your math word wall as you introduce each operation and add new cards as the year progresses. The physical cards work well at a math center for expression-building games. They’re also useful during standardized test prep when students encounter symbol notation in unfamiliar formats — a quick review of what each symbol means in plain language prevents careless errors.
  • In homeschool: Introduce one symbol at a time as you cover each operation in your math curriculum. The cards are a simple way to formalize the vocabulary around math operations — many homeschool students learn the mechanics of addition before learning the official name for the “+” symbol. These close that gap and make math language explicit.
