I get asked for printable lined paper more than almost anything else on this site, so I finally put everything in one place.

Pick the ruling you need below and download the PDF. One thing before you print: set your printer to 100% or “actual size,” not “fit to page.”

Most printers default to scaling the page to fit, which is exactly the setting that turns genuine wide ruled into some in-between size that isn’t wide ruled or college ruled. (Ask me how I know.) 🖨️

Wide ruled vs. college ruled vs. narrow ruled: what’s the difference?

The short version: it’s all about how much space is between the lines, and that changes how much fits on a page.

• Wide ruled — about 11/32″ apart. Best for younger kids and bigger handwriting.
• College ruled — about 9/32″ apart. The most common choice for teens and adults.
• Narrow ruled — about 1/4″ apart. Fits the most lines per page, best for small handwriting or dense note-taking.

If you’re not sure which one you had in school, college ruled is the safest bet. It’s what most notebooks default to once you’re past elementary school.

College ruled paper

College ruled paper narrows the spacing to about 9/32″, fitting more lines on the page. It’s the standard for high schoolers and college students who write smaller and want more room per sheet before flipping the page. If you’re taking notes rather than learning to write, this is usually the one you want.

Narrow ruled paper

Narrow ruled is the tightest spacing of the three, about 1/4″ between lines. It packs the most writing onto a single sheet, which makes it a favorite for note-heavy classes, journaling, or anyone who just writes small and doesn’t want to waste paper.

Wide ruled paper

Wide ruled paper has the widest line spacing of the three, about 11/32″ between lines. It’s the ruling most elementary and middle school kids grow up writing on, and it’s still the default in a lot of composition and spiral notebooks. If bigger handwriting needs room to breathe, this is the one.
