Free Halloween Flashcards Printable PDF (With and Without Words!)

If you’ve ever tried to teach a room full of kids the word “cauldron” using nothing but your hands and enthusiasm, this Halloween flashcards printable is here to save you. 🎃

This set covers all the October classics: witches, pumpkins, black cats, spiderwebs, the whole spooky cast. I made two versions, one with word labels and one without, so you can use these for way more than just “look at the picture.” Vocabulary drills, memory games, ESL practice, quiet-time coloring… it all works with the same set.

Grab both free PDFs below and let’s get into how to use them 👇

That’s 28 portrait flashcard pages plus two grid/poster overview pages showing the full set at a glance. Every card uses bold lowercase labels so early readers aren’t tripping over capital letters.

Two Versions: With Words and Without

With words: each card has the vocabulary word printed right under the picture. This is your go-to for early literacy drills, sight word practice, and any activity where you want kids connecting the image to the written word. Use it for word tracing, spelling practice, or just building that picture-word association during circle time.

Without words: same exact cards, no text. This version is for when you want kids to name the item themselves instead of reading it off the card. Use it for verbal vocabulary checks, ESL speaking practice, or games where reading the label would give away the answer (looking at you, Halloween Pictionary).

Mom Tip: I print one of each. The labeled set stays in a binder for reference. The unlabeled set gets cut apart and lives in a ziplock bag that travels everywhere. 😂

How to Print: 1-Page, 2-Per-Page, or 4-Per-Page

You’ve got options here depending on what you’re doing with the cards.

• Full page (1 per sheet): best for wall displays, a classroom word wall, or a “guess the word” game where you hold up a giant pumpkin card from across the room.
• 2 per page: the sweet spot for most classroom use. Big enough for little hands to hold and see clearly, but you’re not burning through a full sheet of paper per card.
• 4 per page: your go-to for game sets. Memory match, flashcard drills, small-group centers… anything where kids are handling a whole stack at once. Cut, laminate, done.

Teacher Tip: If you’re building a memory match game, print the no-words version 4-per-page, print it twice, and cut apart for a full matching set.

Features & Benefits

The flat vector, bright kid-friendly palette is the first thing that sold me. Nothing here is scary-scary. It’s Halloween in the “fun costume party” sense, not the “why is that skeleton judging me” sense.

Every card follows the same layout: large centered icons on a clean white panel with thick colored frames in orange, purple, or yellow. That consistency matters more than people think. When every card looks the same except for the picture, kids focus on the halloween crafts for kids and vocabulary, not on figuring out a new layout every time.

These work great as halloween worksheets companions too. Pair a flashcard with a matching coloring page or word search and you’ve got a whole center built in ten minutes.

And because it’s a printable flashcards set at heart, you’re not locked into one format. Print-and-cut activities mean you can trim these down to pocket size, laminate them for years of reuse, or leave them full page for a wall display.

Who It’s For

• Preschool and pre-K teachers running Halloween-themed circle time
• Kindergarten and early elementary teachers doing classroom activities and literacy centers
• ESL and dual-language instructors teaching seasonal vocabulary
• Homeschool parents adding a spooky unit to October lessons
• Moms planning halloween activities for kids for a party or playdate
• Anyone hosting a halloween paper crafts station where kids cut, color, and build

Lesson Plan Ideas

• Vocabulary intro: Show the labeled card, say the word together, have kids repeat it three times. Then flip to the unlabeled version and see who remembers.
• Letter sound practice: Sort cards by beginning sound. “Bat” and “broomstick” both start with B, for example.
• Writing center: Kids trace the word from the labeled card, then draw their own version of the item.
• ESL vocabulary block: Use the no-words set for a “name it in English” warm-up before introducing spelling.
• Story starter: Pull three random cards and have kids build a one-sentence spooky story using all three.

Game Ideas

• Memory match: Print two sets of the no-words cards, mix, and play a classic face-down matching game.
• Halloween charades: Draw a card, act it out, no talking. This pairs perfectly with our Halloween charades printable if you want a bigger round with more prompts.
• I Spy style guessing: Hide a card, give clues, let kids guess before revealing it. Our Halloween I Spy printable game works as a great follow-up activity.
• Speed sort: Time how fast kids can sort the full deck into “spooky characters” versus “objects.”
• Flashcard race: Two kids, one deck, first to correctly name five cards in a row wins.

Other Ways to Use the Cards

• Cut apart and use as party printables decorations taped around the room
• Laminate and hang as a rotating classroom word wall for October
• Use the grid overview pages as a poster for a bulletin board
• Send a few home as homework flashcards for extra practice
• Add to a Halloween sensory bin as printed pieces to find and match

If you’re setting up a full Halloween party spread, our Halloween party sign up sheet printable and Halloween banner sign PDF are easy add-ons that match the same vibe. And if the kids finish early, my youngest could sit for an hour with a good Halloween coloring page from Color and Trace — worth keeping in your back pocket for that one kid who’s always done first.
