If you’ve ever tried to explain “cornucopia” to a five-year-old using only gestures, this Thanksgiving flashcards printable is about to make your life a lot easier. ๐ฆ
This set covers the whole Thanksgiving table and then some: turkey, cranberry sauce, wheat, pinecones, farmers with wheelbarrows full of pumpkins, all of it.
And because one set is never enough for how I actually use these, I made two different styles (illustrated and realistic photo) and two versions of each (with words and without). Four PDFs, endless ways to use them.
Grab your free downloads below and I’ll walk you through exactly how to use each one. ๐

What’s Included
Here’s the full Thanksgiving flashcards vocabulary lineup, all featuring white cards with colored borders and large bold lowercase labels:
- Turkey
- Turkey dinner
- Cornucopia
- Cranberry sauce
- Gravy
- Mashed potatoes
- Stuffing
- Green beans
- Corn
- Dinner rolls
- Pumpkin pie
- Wheat
- Basket
- Leaves
- Acorn
- Pinecone
- Candle
- Harvest (farmer with pumpkins/produce)
That’s around 98 pages total once you count both art styles, both label options, and the two-by-two grid pages that show groups of cards at a glance. Every single card follows the same clean layout so kids aren’t relearning a new format every time you flip to a new word.
Two Styles: Illustrated and Realistic
Illustrated set: flat vector cartoon art. Think a smiling turkey, a friendly farmer pushing a wheelbarrow of pumpkins, a simple gravy boat icon. This is your go-to for younger kids (preschool through early elementary) since the shapes are simple and the colors are bright and non-intimidating.
Realistic set: actual food photography. A real slice of pumpkin pie. A real bowl of cranberry sauce. A real cornucopia spilling actual gourds and grapes. This version is fantastic for older kids, ESL vocabulary work, or anytime you want the vocabulary to connect to something they’ll literally see on the table in a few weeks.
Mom Tip: I use the illustrated set for my 4-year-old’s letter and word matching, and the realistic set for my 6-year-old’s “guess the food” game at the dinner table. Same box, two totally different activities. ๐

Two Versions of Each: With Words and Without
With words: the vocabulary word is printed right under the image. Perfect for early literacy drills, tracing, spelling, and any activity where reading the label is the point.
Without words: same exact images, no text. Use this version for verbal vocabulary checks, ESL speaking practice, or any game where seeing the printed word would give the answer away before a kid even gets to guess.
Teacher Tip: Print the no-words realistic set for older kids and the no-words illustrated set for littles. Same game, two difficulty levels, zero extra work on your end.
Features & Benefits
The realistic photo set is genuinely the standout feature here. Most thanksgiving flashcards you find online are illustration-only, so having actual food and harvest imagery gives kids a much stronger real-world connection between the word “cranberry sauce” and the actual reddish, chunky thing sitting on the table at dinner.
Every card in both styles uses the same two-by-two grid pages format when grouped, which makes these ideal for thanksgiving classroom centers where you want kids sorting or matching without a layout learning curve.
These also double easily as thanksgiving activities for kids beyond straight vocabulary. Pair a card with a gratitude activities for kids exercise (name one Thanksgiving food you’re thankful for, draw it) and you’ve built a whole lesson around one flashcard.
And since these are true print-and-cut manipulatives, you can trim them down for handheld games or leave them full size for a wall display. Either way works.
Who It’s For
- Preschool and pre-K teachers building a thanksgiving preschool vocabulary unit
- Elementary teachers running literacy centers before the November break
- ESL and dual-language instructors teaching seasonal picture word cards
- Homeschool parents adding a Thanksgiving theme to reading or science lessons
- Moms setting up a quiet thanksgiving crafts for kids activity before the actual meal chaos begins
How to Print: 1-Page, 2-Per-Page, or 4-Per-Page
- Full page (1 per sheet): great for a classroom word wall, a big “guess the word” reveal game, or a bulletin board display leading up to the holiday.
- 2 per page: the most practical size for daily classroom use. Big enough to see clearly, small enough that you’re not burning a full page per card.
- 4 per page: best for stacks of cards kids will actually handle, like memory match or flashcard drills. Cut, laminate, reuse every year.
Teacher Tip: For a realistic-vs-illustrated matching game, print one illustrated card and its realistic photo counterpart 4-per-page, cut apart, and have kids match the drawing to the real photo.
Lesson Plan Ideas
- Vocabulary intro: Show the labeled illustrated card first (easier), say the word, repeat three times. Then show the realistic photo version and connect it.
- Sorting by category: Sort cards into “food” versus “harvest/decor” (turkey dinner and stuffing versus pinecone and wheat).
- Writing center: Trace the word from a labeled card, then write one sentence using it.
- ESL vocabulary block: Use the no-words realistic set for a “name it in English” warm-up before moving to spelling.
- Gratitude tie-in: Pick a card, have kids say one thing they’re thankful for that relates to it.
Game Ideas
- Memory match: Print two sets of the no-words cards (illustrated or realistic, your call) and play a classic face-down matching game.
- Thanksgiving Pictionary: Draw a card, no words, teammates guess. This pairs perfectly with our Thanksgiving Pictionary game for kids and adults if you want more prompts in the mix.
- I Spy style guessing: Hide a card around the room, give clues, let kids guess before revealing it, similar setup to our Thanksgiving I Spy game for kids.
- Bingo caller cards: Use the no-words cards as visual bingo callouts to pair with our Thanksgiving bingo printable.
- Speed sort: Time how fast kids can sort the full deck into food versus non-food.
Other Ways to Use the Cards
- Cut apart and tape around the room as simple thanksgiving printables decorations
- Laminate and use as a rotating classroom word wall through November
- Set the realistic photo set out as thanksgiving kids activity placemats conversation starters at the actual table
- Send a few home as extra vocabulary practice
- Use the grid overview pages as a poster for a bulletin board
If you’re hosting the full spread this year, our Thanksgiving potluck sign up sheet and Thanksgiving table place cards pair nicely with these once the kids are done playing and it’s time to actually eat. And if you need five quiet minutes while the turkey’s in the oven, my kids will happily sit with a Thanksgiving coloring page from Color and Trace (works every time, no notes).
