Is there anything more universally beloved than baby animals? 🐄🐖🦆

These free printable baby animal flashcards feature parent-and-baby animal pairs, so kids learn not just the animal’s name, but also what the baby is called (calf, foal, kitten, puppy, cub, chick, and more).

The set comes in four versions:

  1. illustrated with words
  2. illustrated without words
  3. realistic with words
  4. realistic without words.

Great for matching games, early literacy, science units on life cycles, and honestly, just for the delight factor. These are consistently a classroom favorite.

These connect naturally to farm animal flashcards (match the adult farm animal to its baby), forest animal flashcards, and pet flashcards for a broader animal and baby names unit. Pair with alphabet flashcards to work on the letter sounds in baby animal names.

Teaching Baby Animal Ideas & Activities

  • Parent-baby match: Cut apart the parent and baby images (if the card shows both on one card, print two sets: one to keep together and one to cut). Have students match the baby to its parent. This works as a center activity, a floor game, or a whole-class activity on the board.
  • What’s the baby called? Show the adult animal card (from this set or from another animal set) and have students try to name the baby. Calf? Cub? Kitten? Foal? Fawn? This is fantastic vocabulary work and kids love the challenge.
  • Cross-set connection: Pull out matching adult animals from the farm animal flashcards and lay them next to the baby cards. Can students find the match across the two sets?
  • How animals care for their young: Do all animal babies need the same level of care? A human baby vs. a baby sea turtle? Baby animal cards make a great jumping-off point for a discussion on parenting in the animal kingdom.
  • Story starters: Pick a baby animal card, then write a first-person story as that baby animal. What’s your first day of life like? Where are you? What are you scared of? What do you need? Pair with handwriting paper for a writing extension.

Print Sizes and Options:

  • Full page (1 per page): best for bulletin boards, classroom displays, and circle time anchor charts students can see from across the room
  • Half page (2 per page): ideal for homeschool binders, learning centers, and early learners who need larger cards for handling and reading
  • Quarter page (4 per page): great for individual student sets, hands-on activities, and paper-saving when you need multiple copies

Who These Are For

  • Baby animal flashcards are a hit with virtually every age group, but they’re especially strong in preschool through 2nd grade where the “aww factor” keeps engagement high.
  • Realistic sets are a great fit for 1st through 3rd grade science when you’re starting to teach formally about life cycles, animal behavior, and how animals care for their young.
  • Combine with nature journaling, library books, and field observations for a full learning experience.
  • In the classroom: Use these during science centers, in a read-aloud extension, or as the anchor resource for a habitat or animal unit. They work well for whole-class circle time, small group vocabulary work, and literacy centers, especially when paired with nonfiction books about the same animals.
  • In homeschool: These are a low-prep, high-engagement tool for nature study, Charlotte Mason animal lessons, or any unit study built around habitats and wildlife. Print all four versions so you have cards for every type of activity, illustrated cards for younger siblings, realistic cards for older ones doing independent research.
