A zoo field trip is exciting, but the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bus pulls back into the parking lot.
These free printable zoo animal flashcards let you extend that excitement into your classroom with animals like: elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, zebras, pandas, gorillas, and more.
You get four versions:
- illustrated with words
- illustrated without words
- realistic with words
- realistic without words
Great for before, during, and after a zoo visit, or any time you’re doing an animals or habitats unit.

Zoo Animal Lesson Plans and Ideas for Kids
- Habitat sort: Spread out zoo animal cards and have students sort them by where each animal actually lives in the wild: jungle, savanna, tundra, rainforest. This gets kids thinking beyond “zoo” as a habitat.
- Pre-trip prep: Before a zoo field trip, introduce the animals with the illustrated with-words cards during circle time. When kids see those animals at the zoo, they’ll already know the names, great for building observation and reporting skills.
- Post-trip debrief: After a zoo visit, lay out the cards and have students sort which animals they remember seeing vs. didn’t see. Write one thing they noticed about each animal on sticky notes.
- Animal adaptation discussion: Use the realistic cards to talk about why each animal looks the way it does. Why does a giraffe have a long neck? Why does a zebra have stripes? This turns a vocabulary activity into a science conversation.
- Zoo map activity: Draw a simple zoo map and have students decide which enclosures go where based on what animals need (hot climates, cold climates, water access). Students place the corresponding flashcard on the map.
