How to draw the flower of life

The pattern looks complicated, but it is really just one circle repeated. Every circle is the same size, and every new circle is centered on a point where two existing circles cross. That is the whole rule. 🌸

With the printable grid:

The overlapping circles are already drawn, so you are tracing rather than constructing. Pick a circle near the middle as your center, then trace the six circles that surround it. That gives you the seed of life, the seven circle core at the heart of the pattern. Keep tracing outward ring by ring until you have the size you want, then draw one large circle around the whole thing to contain it.

With a compass, from scratch:

1. Draw a circle. Whatever size you pick becomes the size of every circle after it.
2. Do not change the compass width again. Not once. (This is the step everyone skips, and it is why their pattern drifts.)
3. Put the compass point anywhere on the edge of the first circle and draw a second circle.
4. Those two circles cross at two points. Put the compass point on one of them and draw a third circle.
5. Keep going around, always centering on a crossing point, until six circles surround the first one.
6. Expand outward the same way. Each new ring uses the crossing points created by the ring before it.
7. Finish with a large circle around the outside edge.

Things worth knowing:

• Seven circles is the seed of life. Thirteen is the fruit of life. Nineteen complete circles is the classic flower of life.
• Work in light pencil first. The construction lines outside your final circle get erased at the end.
• If your circles stop lining up, the compass moved. Start the ring again rather than trying to fudge it.

The grid works well as a mandala base because the symmetry is already built in. Six circles around one means six identical wedges, so anything you draw in one wedge can be repeated around the center and it will line up. 🎨

How to use it for mandala design:

• Find your center circle and treat it as the middle of the mandala. Everything builds outward from there.
• The petal shapes formed where circles overlap make natural segments. Fill them, outline them, or use them as guides for your own shapes.
• Design one wedge first, then repeat it around all six. Working one section at a time is far easier than trying to keep the whole circle even as you go.
• Rings give you structure. Keep each ring of the pattern to a single motif or color family so the design reads as layers instead of noise.
• Stop the mandala at any ring. It does not have to fill the page to look finished.

For coloring:

Print the grid and color the overlapping shapes directly. The petal and lens shapes created by intersecting circles already form a coloring page, so you can skip drawing entirely if you just want something to fill in. Using the same color for shapes at the same distance from the center is the quickest way to make it look intentional.
