Lesson Plan Ideas for Months of the Year

Once students can name the months, these cards work for a lot more than a wall display. A few ways I build lessons around them:

• Birthday graphing: sort students by birth month using the cards as category headers, then graph the results.
• Seasons sorting: group the month cards under Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer headers.
• Order the year: mix up the cards and have students race to put them back in order starting from January.
• Holiday matching: pair each month card with the holiday or school event that happens during it.
• Days-in-the-month practice: use the cards alongside a quick lesson on which months have 30 vs. 31 days, paired with our calendar numbers for a hands-on count.
