Earth Day (April 22nd) is one of the best opportunities all year to connect science, environmental awareness, and vocabulary all at once.
These free printable Earth Day flashcards feature images related to the environment, nature, and taking care of our planet, things like recycling, trees, water, solar energy, plants, animals, and more.
Two versions: with words and without words. Use them for an Earth Day vocabulary lesson, a science discussion, or an environmental unit any time of year.
These complement the forest animal flashcards, insect flashcards, and ocean animal flashcards for a broader environmental/nature unit. Pair with the Easter flashcards and St. Patrick’s Day flashcards if you’re building a full spring unit.
Earth Day Vocabulary Activities and Ideas
These cards connect environmental vocabulary to science concepts, discussion, and student action:
- Reduce, reuse, recycle sort: have students sort the Earth Day cards into three categories — things we reduce (using less), things we reuse (using again), things we recycle (breaking down and remaking). Generates real discussion about everyday choices and connects to environmental science standards
- Connect to animal habitats: pair Earth Day vocabulary cards with the forest animal, ocean animal, and insect flashcards to discuss how environmental choices affect the places animals live — makes environmental vocabulary emotionally meaningful
- Earth Day pledge: give each student one card and have them write a promise about how they’ll take care of the environment in a way connected to that image. Display the pledges as a class commitment wall through the month of April
- Before and after discussion: for each card, ask: what does this look like when we take care of it? What does it look like when we don’t? Great for generating descriptive language and environmental reasoning at any grade level
- Needs of living things: pair the Earth Day cards with animal and plant-related flashcards to discuss what living things need — clean water, air, sunlight, food. Connects the environmental theme to life science standards
- Take action brainstorm: for each card, students brainstorm one action a kid their age could take (recycling card → “sort our trash at home”; water card → “turn off the faucet while brushing”). Moves the activity from vocabulary to student agency
- Vocabulary matching game: use the with-words and without-words sets together as a matching activity for environmental vocabulary — works as a center, a partner activity, or a quick assessment

Print Sizes and Options
- Full page (1 per page): best for bulletin boards, classroom displays, and circle time anchor charts students can see from across the room
- Half page (2 per page): ideal for homeschool binders, learning centers, and early learners who need larger cards for handling and reading
- Quarter page (4 per page): great for individual student sets, hands-on activities, and paper-saving when you need multiple copies
Who These Are For
- Preschool through 4th grade — younger grades focus on recognizing environmental vocabulary and sorting, older grades can use the cards for complex reasoning, classification, and action planning
- Science teachers integrating environmental topics into life science, earth science, or ecosystems units throughout the year, not just in April
- In the classroom: Earth Day cards work well throughout the entire month of April, not just on April 22nd. Use them for vocabulary instruction tied to your science unit, as a discussion-starter for environmental reasoning, and for bulletin board displays. The reduce-reuse-recycle sort is a strong whole-class or small-group activity that generates real conversation about everyday choices and is easy to differentiate across grade levels.
- In homeschool: These pair naturally with any spring nature study or science unit. Pull out 5–6 cards for a 15-minute discussion-based lesson on environmental stewardship, then have your student write or draw one action they’ll take. No formal curriculum needed to make Earth Day feel meaningful and connected to what you’re already studying.
